This weekend sees – Middy in the War Years – Two days of living history at the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway – Plus two Battle of Britain Memorial Fight Flypasts at Mid Suffolk Light Railway.

The Bank Holiday weekend, 5th and 6th May, will see two days recreating the atmosphere and scenes of World War II and how it was in the 1940s.

Featuring displays, re-enactors and military vehicles, this year’s event will see more for visitors to enjoy, including dress parades with uniforms and fashions of the day, drill practice with the ‘Home Guard’ and music in the 1940s style jazz with Bernie Westren’s Wednesday Men.

We have also been scheduled two flypasts from the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, who will be providing a Spitfire on Sunday 5th May and a Dakota on Monday 6th May (weather permitting bearing in mind these aircraft are both over 70 years old).

Plus guest locomotive ‘Sirapite’ – the traction engine on rails – will be in action shunting and on demonstration munitions trains.

As well as unlimited rides on trains with two locos in steam, refreshments will be available from the well stocked tea room and real ale bar. There will also be a Monday BBQ set up at Dovebrook Halt, so visitors can catch a train to lunch at the station. For more details about this event, prices and directions, please visit the Middy website at www.mslr.org.uk

Railways played an important role in wartime Britain, and the ‘Middy’ was no exception as it not only served local communities but two local American air bases with supplies and munitions. WWII was one of the few periods in its history when the Middy actually paid its way.
